Like anywhere, fishing in Vanuatu is seasonal. Some days you'll get lucky, others you won't. That aside, strike rates here are amongst the highest in the world with large numbers of fish that have not yet learned to avoid the lure or line. And while there is no fishing from the shore here at Hideaway (we are a marine sanctuary after all!) you can use us as a base for your fishing trips. Big game boats, sport fishing vessels and smaller reef fishing rigs are all able to pull up at our jetty and get you under-way.

Comments by Steve Starling on Hideaway Island

"My job as a full-time angling writer, photojournalist and television presenter has taken me all over the globe in search of piscatorial adventure, and I have been fortunate enough to cast a line into some of the most fish-rich waters on earth. People often ask me what I do to relax and unwind after all of this high pressure travel... Well, the answer is simple; I go fishing!

"For me, the perfect holiday involves a family getaway that combines a delightful, tropical destination, friendly, low-key service, good food, plenty for every member of the family to do... and enough high quality fishing to keep me challenged and stimulated! Recently, I found all of that and more just four hours flight from home at Hideaway Island, in Vanuatu.

"I already knew that Vanuatu was a great place for a family vacation, and earlier visits had confirmed that this island chain offers world-class angling action, but this latest trip allowed me to combine those elements into a holiday the Starling's will long remember!

"Hideaway Island is a tough place to describe in just a few sentences... However, to get some idea of the Hideaway experience, cast your mind back to the very best summer holidays you ever had as a kid... There are many parallels!

"From the time you kick your city shoes off and climb aboard the little ferry that will take you across the waters to your personal slice of paradise, the feeling is one of freedom, fun and excitement. You can do as little or as much as you wish to on Hideaway, but most of all, you do exactly what YOU want to do... And chances are, you won't put those shoes back on until it's time to leave, a week or 10 days later!

"On our latest visit, fishing was a relatively low priority. Nonetheless, my son Tom and I found time to get out for a couple of half day sessions aboard Hideaway Island's aluminium runabout... and the results were nothing short of outstanding! Trolling lures and soaking baits in the warm, blue waters of the harbour, we hooked everything from green jobfish and coral trout to big yellowfin tuna and a beautiful, tail-walking sailfish.

"The standard of angling action was nothing short of exceptional, and the Hideaway Island sportfishing operation offered a uniquely affordable and accessible means of tapping into a world that many folks tend to regard as the sole province of well-heeled and well-connected individuals reclining aboard gleaming gin-palaces while sipping fancy cocktails... Believe me, at Hideaway, nothing could be further from the truth (although the fancy cocktails are certainly there, if you want them)!

"I would have no hesitation whatsoever in heartily commending Hideaway Island Resort and also the superb Hideaway Island operations to any intending visitor... So slip your shoes off, grab your fishing rod (or one of theirs), and get going!"

Deep Water Game Fishing

A recently formed chain of volcanic islands, Vanuatu's waters drop off very quickly once you're clear of the coast, with large schools of fish swimming in more than 1,500m of water. Game and sport fishing catches in these more exposed waters include blue, black and striped marlin, huge yellowfin tuna, sailfish, sharks and giant trevally.

One of Vanuatu's largest game fishing operators is Don MacLeod. His fleet includes a 34 foot Blackwatch game fishing vessel, Shogun, and an 8.5m Bayliner, Trophy. Both are fitted out to cater for the big game angler and keen sports fisherman. The vessels are equipped with the latest in Penn and Shimano gear matched to custom rods. With skilled crews manning the boats, don says it's rare to return without having caught something.

All fish remain the property of the boat, however the Waterfront Bar and Grill will cook a fish dinner for each angler at no cost. If you don't catch anything, you can choose off the menu for a free meal worth up to 2,000vt.
